Mediaset won't increase stake in Digital+

digitalItaly’s major commercial audiovisual group Mediaset has ruled out any increase in its shareholding in Spanish satellite pay-TV operator Digital+ in the short term.

The 22% of Digital+ that Mediaset has agreed to buy from Prisa – owner of Digital+’s operator Sogecable - is a "good starting point" according to Pier Silvio Berlusconi, Mediaset's vice-president.

Mediaset is waiting for the Spanish regulatory authorities to give the green light to the purchase of the Digital+ stake, a deal which also includes the buy-out of Sogecable's national private free-to-air channel Cuatro. The company hopes to get the nod before September.

Last year Prisa signed an agreement with Spanish channel Telecinco and its owner Mediaset for the buyout of Cuatro and of 22% of Digital+ in exchange for 18% of Telecinco and €491 million in cash.
