Optus: Free World Cup mobile TV a success

    Rose Major .

World_Cup_mobile_TVAustralian telco Optus said it had reached 300,000 live streams of its mobile TV World Cup coverage which the company had decided to provide for free to 3G mobile subscribers.

Optus has been offering live coverage of all 64 matches in the tournament via mobile TV. Take-up has “exceeded expectations,” the company said, despite matches taking place in the middle of the night, Australian time. “With the knockout phases of the tournament still in full swing, Optus expects momentum to grow for the service,” a statement said.

Mobile TV coverage of major sporting events often incurs an extra subscription fee for those wanting to access the service.

World Cup footage is uninterrupted and has been optimised especially for the mobile phone with dedicated cameras at the stadiums for close-up shots. This feed ensures that mobile customers can see the details of the game easier.

Mark Mulder, Optus’ General Manager Content and Portals said: “We’ve heard stories of people staying in bed and watching the live streams as opposed to braving the cold of their living room. This is the type of choice which we looked to provide this service, so seeing this sort of usage is very exciting.”

Largst single game streamed by Optus customers was the round-robin stage decider Australia v Serbia withover 25,000 streams provided. Second most popular was Korea vs Greece, representing Australia’s ethnic diversity, followed by Germany vs Serbia. The two most popular teams aside from Australia have been Serbia and Korea.
