The growing importance of thematic services in Russia has been underlined by the research company TNS Russia.
AKTR and Advertology report that it has increased the number of such channels it monitors in its national electronic measurement project TV Index Plus from 24 in January 2008 to 87 in March this year.
Data published by TV Index Plus shows that the percentage of people watching at least one thematic channel in cities with a population of 100,000+ rose from 33.6% in April 2007 to 55.9% between February-April 2009.
Rising take-up of cable TV services and the launch of new thematic channels (around 40 a year) are driving growth in the viewing of such channels.
