Hispasat helps Haiti
HispasatSpain's satellite system Hispasat is taking part in the cooperation project 'Haití: Virtual Rooms' together with the Cultural and Educational Latin-American Television (TEIb).
At an international meeting with Latin American educational organizations being celebrated in the Dominican Republic, Hispasat made some tests of several educational tools the satellite technology can offer through a video-conference and a multicast channel broadcast over IP. The broadcast was transmitted to the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo.
The Spanish satellite operator has experience in these kind of transmissions and so it becomes the ideal vehicle in those places where access is difficult or where there are infrastructure problems.
For years Hispasat has been giving services to educational tele-centres in order to promote equal opportunities in accessing the new technologies, the democratization of knowledge in the schools and to bridge the 'digital divide’ among populations.
In the case of the virtual rooms of Haití the goal is to set up school rooms with the necessary technology to receive satellite signals so that students can receive live the classes of one teacher so they come back to classes after the earthquake.
Besides satellite transmissions Hispasat is also offering internet access to all the citizens taking part in this project.
