Cable TV suffers in Brazil

DTH is beginning to win the subscription war in Brazil. Latest data from Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency (up to May) saw DTH connections make further progress, and cable TV falling further behind.
DTH saw 40.6% penetration (compared with 37.4% in January), while cable TV fell back from 62% market share to May’s 55.3%.
In May, pay-TV added 177,349 new subscribers, thus recording a 2.2% increase since April. Likewise, it reached 8.2m households and this year has already recorded an accrued 10% growth. Cable TV recorded a 0.9% increase, while MMDS, still falling, has lost 0.4% of its base.
According the NTA, and as reported by NexTVLatam, cable operators have 4.53 million clients, while there are 3.33 million DTH users and 329,000 MMDS clients.
