On demand takes off in Poland

On demand takes off in Poland

On demand is growing rapidly in popularity in Poland, with the public broadcaster TVP being the latest company to launch a service.

According to Rzeczpospolita, vod.tvp.pl made its debut this week and already offers 1,600 clips. It is a paid-for service, with each clip costing PLN5 (€1.23) or PLN6.10 if the payment is made by SMS. Alternatively, clips can be bought in one of three packages: five, 15 or 30 clips, costing PLN15, PLN30 and PLN45 respectively. The service can also be ordered via SMS by viewers living in the UK, Ireland and Germany.

Poland’s two other leading broadcasters already have their on-demand services – Polsat’s ipla.pl and vod.onet.pl in the case of TVN – and they are proving to be increasingly popular. TVN’s service, for instance, had 1.85 million unique users this April and Polsat’s 614,000.

There are also such portals as iplex.pl and Wasze Filmy offering on demand movies free of charge and relying solely on revenue from advertising. The former has had 1.7 million views since this February and hopes to break even next year.
