Russia is likely to see the launch of a new art house movie pay-TV channel by the end of the year.
According to Cableman and filmz.ru, it will be operated by a company named Kino bez granits (Cinema without borders), in which the media entrepreneur Alexander Rodnyansky acquired a 51% stake earlier this year.
Kino bez granits has a library of 1,500 titles and will be targeting a potential audience of up to 6 million people. Although it will require 150,000 subscribers to break even, Rodnyansky believes it could grow its subscriber base up to 2 million.
He would also like to establish a network of art house cinemas.
