The Romanian communications market is likely to be radically transformed in the next 2-3 years, according to Ovidiu Ghiman, Romtelecom’s head of strategy and business development.
Speaking at a conference organised by the incumbent telco and law firm Tuca Zbarcea and Associates and quoted in ZF, he added that this would be done through a long series of acquisitions and by the launch of new services.
OTE-backed Romtelecom has plans to make itself the leading player in the market within such a short time-frame ahead of RCS/RDS and UPC, chiefly by growing aggressively in the TV and internet sectors.
Significantly, both Vlad Cercel, the MD of Tuca Zbarcea and Associates, and Catalin Marinescu, the president of the regulatory body ANCOM, confirmed that international telco operators have expressed serious interest in entering the Romanian market earlier this year but decided to postpone their plans until the general situation in the country improves.
