Hi I think that acm/vcm are really data type links that can be locked onto with some receivers and sat cards but the quality is rubbish and not worth the effort.

Not at present.Maybe in the future on next generation Stb's.
TBS 6925 card is the only practical way for most people at present.

Multi-stream receivers are available now search Openbox SX6 its one of the only available receivers to handle multistream ACM/VCM 16/32APSK

About hardware, there is TBS-5925 card on USB and theoretical it can work on VU+ and DM. However I did not see driver for that. There sources of frontend driver are closed, so it's not that easy to implement that.

Do you have this Openbox. I heard it's good for dx, but no E2 is big minus for me.
