    Thunder and lighting VU+ duo

Wow was just sitting watching TV when it started lashing raining and then came thunder and lightening . While I was in Awww of the thunder and lightening, there was a flash in the corner of my eye (in the direction of my vu duo) then looked at the telly and there was no signal and the vu duo was off. I tried flicking the switch at the back and it still would not come on. I tried it with a different power cable that I know is working and still no luck. I opened it open and there is a smell of burning from what I assume is the power source.
I assuming The power source is fried.

Any one have any other suggestions on what could be the problem.

Im near tears that box was my baby.

    Thanks for any help

Is there any light on the front of the duo ie a red one. It could be a coincidence with the lightening but I had an experience a few years ago when it fried the circuits of an amp and dvd player but not the telly and couldn't claim on insurance.
However the power board on the duo are prone to failing but repair kits are readily available. Do a search and you will find photographs and details so you can compare with your box.

    Good luck nml

There is no light. It us totally life less. OK thanks
i will have a look. The lightening knocked out my Internet too. What a disaster.

I checked for the repair guide u mentioned but its only If u have red light and a blown capacitor. I think mine is just totally fried as I can't see any damage what so ever to any part of the psu or any other part of the box.

I'm sorry for you my friend

If I'm not mistaken the power supply of the vu+ duo is inside the box.
Look carefully for some blown or burn capacitor in the board where the power supply is located.

I suggested you to visit an electronic.
He has special tools for measuring and can tell you if the motherboard is good or not and if you have to replace only the power supply.

If the damage is limited to power supply then you can buy a new one from the net.

i checked the psu board and main board but couldn't find any bulging or damaged capacitors. from a quick ****** search the psu seems a big problem on the vu+'s

i'll see tomorrow if i can find someone to fix it. fingers crossed its just the psu.

Since the Vu is relatively new, maybe you still have your guarantee/warranty, and could possibly ask for a replacement.

Good Luck with finding an electrician!

Its a clone so I doubt i have any come back on it and i have it over a year so even if it was the real deal It still wouldn't be under guarantee.

Time to look into a new box I think.

I think that only the psu board has been damaged.
Go to an electrician to test the motherboard and see if he can repair the psu.
A new psu for your clone box from China costs around 20€.

Clone Vu's are well known for there psu problems, I had 3 go on mine before I traded up to a Solo2.
Saying that, if it threw your internet out as well It seems like it would've been fried even if it was original.
Maybe try a new psu first as they only cost about $20 from china.
Either that or take it to a repair store to see what they can do.
Maybe also invest in some surge protected plugs.

The Internet could be caused by any number of problem it went out last year because of thunder and lightening cuz lightening hit a tree and that tree then fell on the phone line by my house. Then that tree fell on my car. A great day that was.

The only thing the love tightening knocked out was the sat box. Definitely going to invest in a surge protector.

Yeah I looked into the psu from china the postage times are like a month doh. Unless I wanna may ups with is like 40 dollars. Can get one from UK for 40€. Might try that if I can't find someone to fix it today.

I'm sure you can get them from u.k., but you do pay a slight premium. Try one.of the u.k. clone sellers.
I've been out of the clone scene for so long I can't remember any of them though.

i brought the box to my buddy who fixes most things under the sun.
the psu is totally gone he said and he said the mother board maybe too but we can't check as we don't have another psu lying around.

i tried ebay and theres a guy selling one for 40 euro including p&p
does anyone else know of a reliable clone seller in the uk or ireland so i can compare the prices.

does anyone know if a vu duo2 or solo2 psu will work in my box as i may just buy one of these instead as that box could be as dead as a donkey. then i could just check using there psu to see if its the main board too.

i always thought u only need a surge protector in countries with unstable power like the usa. i think the surge may of come thru the Ethernet cable as the internet is down in my house and nothing else in the house seems to be affected by the surge. so the surge protector would of done nothing.

You definitely can't use a solo2 power supply as it's external.

i like the sound of that. it means its easy to replace.

the solo2 clones are only 200euro on aliexpress.

does anyone know of a place i can get a real vu solo2/dou2 so i can compare the prices.
