These boxes do update, however it depends on the servers that the streams are hosted on, most of the free channels that are available are almost always available however, a friend of mine had the BeIN channel bundle from 1-10, including the 1HD-5HD however now the 1-5 HD channels are not working, although the 1-10 are still up. It also depends on the firmware that is installed in the device itself, so I'm not sure if other devices would have the option to update.

Usually they last as the server is active and if it's a big one then you will have channels and support until your subscription end.

Android boxes will update if the manufacturer keeps giving it support and some of the Android forums keep doing the hack that improve the box. and the most up to date versions of android can be loaded it will be ok.
But as time goes by it is all down to the chips in the box, advances in the writing of the apps, ect, the chips will not be able to cope, like early versions of android hardware say running up to 2.3 they get very hard to update because there is no support and the chips are becoming obsolete to run to run the new programs,
It is like Windows if you are running XP and try to move up to Win8 your PC is not up to it.

do u actually have to buy a sub to a server so for these boxes so i thought they just streamed channels from a link for free like streaming channels from the frontrowsport site like u would on ur pc.

I think that you can find box with or without subscription.
The method of streaming is the same as on the pc.

If yours is a android box you can watch nearly anything for free it is just a matter o downloading the right apps or connections to streams. xbmc has now gone a bit crap but you can try it, also find out if you can root your box. also open debugging in the settings and also allow mock locations.
