Re: New generation set top boxes

Android has at it's heart Linux so why can it not be used as a OS of a satellite receiver it
has become a popular OS and user friendly why call it a toy when you are already getting
    receivers running it.

Re: New generation set top boxes

I think android on the sat boxes can not match the Linux box because lines is more powerfull os than android and android is devoping and Linux is alredy developed . I know and accept that android on ****** tv box convert u r tv to ****** tv but required more time to developed the ****** tv box as a Linux satellite boxes

still need to wait for user feedback on the work of the bottom boxes with known emulators. I think it's not so easy and it takes time and of course a good software.

yes, exactly, thx for this comments !

            that is the question !

-> what ever it might be,

            is
to be popular and user friendly
            (-- marketingly attractive --)

a sufficient prerequisite to be a confident long term daily-used device ?

please dont forget that we are talking for a device that cost only $100 when a good receiver is over $300. you cannot compare them. when the hit the market hard and the program developers start getting those android box serious then maybe they upgrade them with memory, ram, etc making a $300 android box. let see witch will be better then.

                ok, however,

a cosmic cpu is not required to run a full dedicated linux satrcvr distro

                exemple:
                __https://www.dream-multimedia-tv.de/en/dm-500
                250 MHz PowerPC Processor
32 MByte Flash, 96 MByte RAM
                Enigma, Linux Operating System
                10/100Mbit compatible Ethernet Interface

                V.24/RS232 Interface
                analog modem
S/PDIF Interface for digital bit stream out (AC-3)

                ...
                exemple:
                __http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raspberry_Pi

                Specifications Model A Model B
                Target price: US$ 25 US$ 35

SoC: Broadcom BCM2835 (CPU, GPU, DSP, SDRAM, and single USB port)

CPU: 700 MHz ARM1176JZF-S core (ARM11 family, ARMv6 instruction set)

GPU: Broadcom VideoCore IV @ 250 MHz

                Memory (SDRAM):
                - 256 MB (shared with GPU)
                - 512 MB (shared with GPU)

The android stbs are cheaper because of the cpu in my opinion as those cpu's are used in many cheap chinese tablets and are mass produced = cheaper

I watched the video, but not overly impressed to be honest. Think it would take one of the big players to invest in android satellite receivers to polish it out, but I can't really see that happening.
Might be of interest to someone in the market for an openbox, skybox, etc though.

Re: New generation set top boxes

For those of you that believe that an android receiver is a good choice, I dare you to buy one and test it, and then write a full review on them in our forum.

When we are testing a sat receiver, we are testing the quality of the picture, the quality of the device, the ability to connect to a server (cccam, mgcamd, etc), the ability of using plugings and addons, the support and, of course, the life expectancy of the receiver.

Many of those who have bought chinese tablets are very happy and others are not and cry their money.
For the end, remember that half the videos uploaded on ******* are fake and are there in order to misinform the people.

                          yes,

and this survey, should mention the tester class out from (let's say) 3 users classes:

                          not geek users

                          . users

                          geek users

each of them have their own requirement level according ergonomics, functionalities, flexibility, support, ...

In reply to Arbiter on you ****, you are watching real time sat tv through the internet,
ln real time it is not a android box getting sat signals through a dish, nearly every media player is capable of doing that,

fandm I don't believe we can confirm whether this is iptv or dvb s2 signals, however the idea is not far fetched, as in we can except an android dvb s2 stb in the near future, I do agree with others regarding a mainstream company's investment would boost sales and make it more reliable.
