Hello,

I have two sat receivers with pvr-function via external usb and two hdds for that purpose.
But the problem seems to be the electrical power consumption of the hdds.
If I use the hdds on a pc - no problem. If I use them on the sat-receivers - problems of speed or normal running.
I have identified the problem as the electrical power-consumption of the hdds. So my question: If I use an active usb-hub between receiver and hdd, will this active hub raise the electrical power that the hdds work normal (usefull) for recording?

I think it will work properly with active usb-hub because that hub provides power to the connected devices from its own adapter. The passive usb is not good because it 'steals' energy from the receiver.

Does an active-hub give the complete electrical power or only support the power from the receiver if it falls under a critical level?
The receiver defenitly doesn't give enough power for the hdd.

And I wonder a bit about the low usb power of the receiver. In my case a Xtrend 4000...

additional usb hub -> usb driver for the hub and (low) power
additional usb drive disk -> usb driver for the disk and (some) power

i understand you've checked for both device (hub+disk) driver and power

now, you propose this hw config:

+ - usb hdd : 16 gb

the 2.5" hdd are lower with consumption -> power is supply by the mastr device (pc, ecvr) through usb connection

the 3.5" hdd are higher with consumption, and therefore are usually delivered with an extern elec power supply -> this might be a better solution

...And that is the advantage an active usb hub. With it you have the
full power of the connected USB device.

And no, I didn't check hub+disk. I'm planing to buy an active-hub so I ask for experiences here if my idea will work.
And I only will use a 2,5" hdd (1 TiB)

So the hub is the new (and I hope strong enough) and only power supply for the hdd?
I will check and post the result.

It could make some difference if the hdd is powered only by the usb or by an external power supply. The usb could not have enough power to make hdd work well. Do you have an 3,5" hdd with external power supply to try?

An active USB hub is a USB hub which has its own power supply.
It will come with a DC power adaptor to power it.
So, I think that you will not have any problem using it because of providing electrical power from its own power.

I've read that also perhaps the format (ntfs) is a problem on linux-receivers.

Mate, let's break your problem in two:
do you need more usb ports or all you need is a more powerful power supply ?

In the first case you need an active usb hub, i.e. a device that takes power from it's own power supply.
If in the second case all you need is a power supply and a "Y" usb cable, that is a cable that has a second usb male to plug into the external power supply.

Defenitly more electrical power. And another format. NTFS is not optimal for linux-based systems.

I'm just trying an active hub from a friend. It's working fine (after new formating to ext3).
That's it, i'll order an active hub!

last but not least,

do you know the power of the rcvr power supply ( according to the specs) ?

that should be nice to know to check if a rcvr is strong enough to support internal hdd , or external usb power supplied hdd (2.5" or 3.5")

The receiver is a Xtrend et4000. It has an externel power supply (230v ac to ~20v dc) and a very low usb-power on the two ports. I don't know exactly, but I defenitly recommend for users an active hub for this receiver! Without this, an usb-stick is working fine, but a hdd defenitifly not.

remember, power is given in watts, and the watt definition:

P = U I
watt = volt * ampere

for example, on my external hdd, i have a power supply 1.5 A under 12 V, that is

18 w := 12 V * 1.5 A

and consumes 18 W


my car battery is only 12 V, but with a troughput of 45 A, that is a nominal power of

540 [W] := 12 * 45 [VA]

but can be deliver higher peak power on short time

[watt] figure his is the real power consumption indicator

can you check up on the rcvr power supply these 2 figures ( V and I )
