    Optimizing picture quality on sd-channels

    Hello,

a short question for your experiences. I have a ferguson avira102e (but it's the same problem for every receiver). On Amazon it's written (and confirmed by users) that the receiver has a good picture quality in sd-channels.
In hd-channels the quality is very good, so that's not the problem!

OK, every producer announces the good sd-picture-quality about their receivers.
I've tested and tested but it seems to be a bit difficult.
There are different opinions about 720p or 1080i upscaling, better change picture settings in receiver or on television...

Do you have experiences for getting the best result with sd-channels?

Try to connect the receiver to the tv with hdmi cable. I use my receiver with hdmi and sd channels are way better than with using a scart.

I'm using (of course) a hdmi cable. Otherwise I'll not be able to watch the hd-channels in hd!
My question is about the optimizing of possible receiver/tv settings.

A lot depends on the tuner in the STB , I am not familiar with yours but if your HD picture quality is good then obviously your signal is ok, using a good quality HDMI and using the STB to do the scaling is the way I would do it. Unfortunately the SD pictures vary so much due to the age of some of the programs and also the Sat you are on. Try some of the German channels on 19E, I find them to be the best on my Spiderbox.

The only way to optimise SD picture settings is through the TV itself as using the HDMI connector on a satellite receiver the SD picture is already going through an Upscaled Post processing adjustment before it reaches the TV after this it is up to the TV itself to display the picture so adjustments need to be made there.

Ideally first you would try and switch of all picture processing in the TV main menu such as MPEG noise reduction, Digital Noise Reduction etc... then adjust the other settings on your TV for a more natural picture

            One thing is absolutly correct:
The picture quality depends on the used bitrate! My signal, snr, used (sat- or hdmi-) cables etc. is in good condition.

It's about: better use 1080i or 720p for upscaling? My TV has 1920*1080 pixel so I use 1080i. Some say it's better to use 720p?! This would mean another scaling in the tv.

And is it better to change picture settings (brightness, contrast, sharpness...) in the receiver (in my case possible) or the tv? My receiver has the newest generation of the ALi-chip which should make a very good sd-picture - when I believe ferguson, amazon...
Or is there nothing which really helps and all is advertising nonsense by fake user comments?

Personally, I use 1080i upscaling and it works fine for me. What is about picture settings, I set it in the tv and not in the receiver because that way works better for me.

Myself, did all my changes on my vu+ duo, has different enhancement possibilities.
I'm very happy of the result for sd channels.
                Using 1080i.

Re: Optimizing picture quality on sd-channels

many modern models of satellite receivers have a problem with the quality of sd-channels and hd-channels excellent, to improve the quality of the picture sd-channels for receivers openbox is written alternative software.

Dear Always use auto mode in your recveiver in video output if you have television like Bravia other HD tv because it will automatically adjust the TV output pic in SD channels which resulted excellent quality pic.

                        Upscaling is the correct answer.
A mathematical calculation is used to change SD resolution to HD resolution. Optimising the image is more or less successful depending on the quality of your hardware.

                          hi

Most probably you box doens't have such an output, but on an 'older' receiver I've had very good results (on both hd -> was the same as with hdmi ; and on sd -> was far better than dhmi) with a dvi-cable - other cable is needed for the audio (stereo or optical digital). Jusr a thought ...

video enhancement plugin you can install as plugin, to download from server image maker (possible for black hole image, vti image)

Upscaling is a process of adding missing pixels through pixels interpolation.
You can't expect a miracle from this process and I think that best results are related to user's point of view and preferences.
In short, only you can decide what's best for you.
