Which Sat receiver would you recommend?

I've been off the Sat scene for a few years now. I'm fed up giving >£130K per month to the cable company and am now looking to get Sat installed to give more choice. I've done lots of reading here and on other sites and tbh its all a bit confuzing at the moment.

I know its a bit subjective but what receiver would you recommend for a beginer who would like to be able to record, needs Hi Def, running a motorised system but mainly pointing at Astra 28 and Hotbird.
easy (at least no more dificult than the norm) to set up, tons of support - I'll need it.

From my own reseach I'm looking at the Dreambox DM800 HD SE Clone with a retro fitted 250GB Hard Drive at a cost of circa £240. Do the members think this would be a good choice for a relative newbie.

Difficult to say - what do you want: clone will do or not? server wanted or only client? The choice you made seems good, even I only have 'client' boxes and very pleased at the moment. Dreambox DM800 HD SE Clone with a retro fitted 250GB Hard Drive will be a good choice. But I think a better choice for you would be a receiver with two tuners. The cost may be a little bigger but it is worth investing. I recommend VU+ SOLO2 - TWIN Tuner DVB-S2 cost about £270 without hard drive. Very good tuner.

Thanks, yes I looked at the Gigablue but was put off a little as the support for the Dreambox seems much better. Yes I saw the earlier post but I think the poster was looking for something more basic than I am. Server / Client - I'm a bit lost here.....server means that I can share my card with others. Client means that I can only accept shares? From reading I think this is correct but I'd appriciate any pointer in this.

Many thanks. The VU+ was my third choice after the DM800 SE (1st) and the DM Pro (2nd). I only put the VU+ i third due to the higher cost particularly when the hard drive is included. I realise you get an original box, not a clone, but from the posts on this site it seems that the DM clones are almost as good as the original units. If I did go for the VU+ with two tuners so as to be able to watch one and record another, does this mean I would need two cables from the LNB?

hi

- server/client: correct (basically closed linux = client = cccam or other cam integrated in (alternative) receiver soft ; open linux = server = you can install 3rd party images and the versions you want - needs more pc/linux-knowledge)
- in theory best to use 2 cables from the lnb, but if you use the 'loop through' function from tuner 1 to tuner 2 you can watch and record on the same polarisation H or V if I'm not mistaken). Works for me, but isn't ideal .

Definetly a Dreambox or a VU+. If you like to go the geniune way, then you can get a DM500HD if you don't plan to have your own server running, if you want to maybe you better get a 800HDse. If you don't want to spend that much money, get a clone dm, they aren't that expensive, but still do good work.
