    Re: Satellite Internet?

I've never had experience with such high ping times, but I guess it would effect your viewing. I've been advised before that anything over about 250 ms and you can start getting problems.
But that is just hearsay, no personal experiance.

this website deals with supplying and installing satellite equipment
in Spain and from looking at their forums seems to get positive feedback.

        nml
That is a really high. C lines need good ping speed even if the download speed is only 1mb. You don't need a very hight download speed but at least a good ping speed. Thats why people manage to wach it with an old dial up network of 1 mb download.

Have you looked at 3g option? Check which provider has the best coverage in your area.
My phone gets downloads of around 8-10 mb and ping is under 100 ms.

Can you please do a ping test and let us know what do you get? Do you use your internet for CS? What is the quality like?

I was looking at the prices for broadband in Spain the most expensive seems to
be by telephone line because you paying line rental cost as well the boadband
cost then by satellite but the initial set up cost is large. From another thread
we have seen that download of data by sat receiver is small so you better of
sticking with WiFi using a 3G dongle.

Price in Cyprus looks good for satellite internet up to 10Mbps and the TV (N0V@) for 45euros.

Best to find which 3g provider is best in your area. Get a free payg SIM, stick a few euros on there and test it for ping and dl speed.

                        Re: Satellite Internet?

I've asked a friend of mine who has sat-internet. Ping time about 400 - 500ms. He doesn't use CS so he can't tell if this works.

But the ping time is high.

the ping will not be the same on every location, and it may be because of the satellite signal is not good.

                            means 72000km / 300000km/sec (speed of light)

= 240ms only for transmitting the signal by sat.
                            It's wrong: double it!
Signal has to go from you to satellite, from there to sat-provider (and net) and response from there to sat and then to you...

Herrr, you are right, when you use the upload to connect to the provider, but if you use for this the normal cable connection, you only have one time sat-distance and back (72000km).
