    Europe to get (satellite) pay-radio

Interesting news for all sat and radio-lovers.
A quite new (at least for Europe) kind of radio broadcasting starts in France.
Really not completely new, because in USA is reality since some years and there was also Afristar/Worldspace project.
First thing to say it's not usual radio on sat, but you can receive this L-band directly with a special (portable) radio receiver, without usual dish.

Here the news, from Advanced Television:
French media regulator le Conseil supérieur de l’audiovisuel (CSA) has licensed Onde Numérique to broadcast pay-radio in the L-band by satellite over Europe. Transmissions will be made on the Eutelsat/SES Solaris Mobile satellite that’s been in orbit on Eutelsat’s W2A craft since April 2009.

This latest scheme is initially focused on French users and will provide for 9 new digital radio channels exclusive to the bouquet plus 43 new music-based channels covering niches such as jazz, rock and other international styles. Additionally the service will broadcast 7 public stations and the Euronews’ radio service.

CEO Franz Cantarano says the service will start towards the end of next year.

Some of the radio channels on satellite are available only on encrypted transponders and you need subscription to listen to those radio channels as well as to watch tv channels.

Do you mean in ordinary transponders?
      Yes, especially in Nova.
There was also a very rich bouquet of music channels some years ago, but I don't remember the name (multichoice, perhaps).
The new thing about the news I gave it's more "radio" use: the receiver is portable: it has its own antenna on it.
In USA they have the same kind of thing since some years (pay, too). In the beginnin' there was also Bob Dylan as DJ...

To be honest I would not pay for satellite radio at all. DAB is already good enough at home and I can get all my British channels at home via freeview/freesat. Same radio channels in the car and at work. Although if I'm travelling abroad I tune in my radio to local channels. Don't understand what they say but songs are always in English unless I want to listen to local music.

Re: Europe to get (satellite) pay-radio

The biggest problem on radio "over" DVB (DVB-S/S2 or DVB-T) is that I must use a decoder or TV connecting analog cinch output to analog aux cinch input of my hi-fi or radio distribution system.
To be honest the only reason to use that system is for large retail chains to distribute their own custom radio in all its stores without the backing of internet systems.
Only other reason is to have a backup system at home in case of faulty of FM reception system or own Hi-Fi and, obviously, with DVB-S when necessary, the possibility of listen to the same radio when you are abroad.

If you are a radio enthusiast you can get your radio via internet in any country of the world. The quality will not be great but at least you will have your own's choice radio. You won't need all the satellite equipment and a subscription card. You can buy internet connection instead and listen to your radio.

These days there are lots of internet radio players available and depending on your connection speed the quality is very good and you can also choose the type of music you want.
Only reason I think anyone would pay to listen to just radio on the sat is if they had no choice, I expect they will be bundled with pay tv.
I personally have never listened to radio on the sat because there are so many other options to listen to radio or music.

I love local music where ever I go. Its easy enough to be driving through the vinyards in France or French countryside and listen to beautiful French music. Or driving up/down the mountains in Spain and listen to Catalan/Spanish music via car stereo. As soon as I come back home (France and Spain) I will switch on TV and will forget about the radio music, unless I am cooking and switch on the DAB in the kitchen for local music.

That's the romantic side of radio and brings me back to my 15 years, when (at the end of the 70s) I was one of those pirates who build new italian broadcasting.
Then it was business for me for such a long time...but those years were amazing, all was to build, everyone did all, from speaking to installing antennas...
(sorry for OT: I travel also in France quite often, what radio do you like? RFM, NRJ? )

I have mention these channels in one of my posts in another thread. NRJ plays about 50-60 new songs repeatedly. RFM is more soft music.I listen to them both but I also listen to RNB (Radio Nord Bretagne). Only NRJ is available on satellite specially on Astra 19.2 When Im in England All my favourite British channels stay with me on my TV, Radio, Phone, Care Stereo, Work Radio, almost every where. I dont need a sattelite for it. And I will not pay for its subscribtion because I am already paying £145 TV licence per year.

Re: Europe to get (satellite) pay-radio

There is an abundance of radio channel already available across all satellites so I do not think this idea will take off. If you have a smart phone it plays it over wifi or through your PC anyway, so it will cost less to just pay for internet if you somehow don't already have it! 3G is another option if you are travelling.
