      Re: Sopcast streaming

Sopcast was popular in its early stages but soon people realized that if they want good tv streaming, they dont need sopcast. Its quality went down and now very few people recognise it. I think it would be waste of time to have sopcast on dreambox when you have Ustream and other services available. Specially when you have a browser available which can browse any streaming website.

Why sopcast is ugly? think that ustream is an ugly method because you must connect to the stream when event starts or you cannot watch it!

Staying on topic, an open source linux version of sopcast exist, but it isn't very stable (many crashes), and I think nobody are interesting in a porting to enigma stb if this isn't stable.

But it has a timeshift of 30 up to 90 seconds and uses a lot of your upload capacity.

Maybe so, but this is what made its stability superior to streaming from Ustream, since you are always guaranteed a running picture as opposed to glitches every few minutes.

Sopcasts pluspoints for me where its stability and reliability, although I have no idea how it fares now as I haven't used it for a long time.

The stream is mostly stable but it uses so much of your upload-capacity that other things don't work correct. While using sopcast I was playing online with a ps3 and had many freezes. When i stopped sopcast everything went well.

Like some other protocols that do an extensive use of your network.
To avoid problems you must set up in your router QoS for "real time" task or for device which have an upper limit on latency time, and if it's possible reserve bandwidth to your consolle.

Yes, thats right, and in eastern europe many sports events are streamed in sopcast. But in west europe it can be a bit dangerous to use this because in germany e.g. providers start sniffing net-traffic on some protocolls. The problem here is not the download of the stream but the upload!

Upload bandwith is adjustable with a correct router configuration.
Obviously, any other reason (sniffing) etc... are not adjustable by a simple configuration!

And thats the problem. But sometimes sopcast is an alternative (especially on football-evenings) if the c-line servers are overloaded.

or if you would like a match not transmitted by satellites that you have pointed previously.

That is not sopcast fault really. If you are using a ps3 and you get someone to open up webpages on a browser it will freeze slightly everytime it clicks. It is because your upload speed of your internet is below 0.5mb. Ideally, you need above 2mb upload speed so that you can do multiple things that are sensitive like online gaming without seeing a loss in performance.

Ohh, I have a good upload speed, but sometimes sopcast offers even HD-quality (1280 x 720 in h264). This uses a lot of capacity.
I agree, sopcast is a good streaming system, but as I said before, the problem is the web-sniffing.
