    BBC at 27.5w

Whilst trawling through king of sat last night i happened upon Intelsat 907 at 27.5w This appears top have all the uk terrestrial channels on it. A few questions if anyone knows the answers.

    1) what market are these aimed at
    2) what opens them (can they be opened with a sly digibox)
    3) (and this ones for you Toby) what size dish would i need in Paphos, Cyprus

    Re: BBC at 27.5w

    hi rikksow,
i also looked into them some time ago.
    intelsat907(27.5w) 11495 v 44100 9/10 dvb-s2/Qpsk
these are in biss as you probably know no doubt, but if you enter biss keys, make sure you put the (ecm_pid) numbers also= (1FFF)
i never managed to open them, but heard reading other sites they do open, sometimes fta also, bbc chns as you know, but also lets not forget all the radio chns, bbc1/2/3/4/radio5 live etc.
i myself have them in box but as yet here in england have never managed to open.
dish size in cyprus, not really looked into that compleately but flysat, (site not to brill now) beam 907spot-1 europe i would think approx same standard sized sky dish required (270cms) in cyprus at least.
but, this a big but, i read on a site they were opening with certain tech-no-mate boxes a while ago, perhaps a teccky owner can confirm.
    (ps, not long now)!!!

I think these channels are received by Brits living in the United States. We always like to have our own home tv and watch "Eastenders" and "Corri" where ever in the world we go. You will see lots of sky dishes around in France and in other European countries. I wish they could make iplayer available in other countries.

And its showing some local channels for BBC as well like Wales and NI. I just wonder if you could prioritise channels according to your area to get BBC Midlands and ITV like that?

These are not for the American Market as the footprint would be almost impossible for our USA friends to pick up, These are in fact back up Channels for the UK

I have not heard anything about them, presumably they would be for the british market and there must be some sort of official box to open them with. Unless they are just testing with views to roll out on a separate platform to sly uk but they seem to be encrypted which is surprising if they are aimed at the uk as they are fta channels over here

Do you know the reason why they are back up channels?
I know as we approach the peak of the suns 11 year cycle a lot of satellite tv producers do have concerns about solar tempests that may potentially interfere with satellites in orbit and power grids the last huge flare was this year 14th July which took out power grids in India ,if the flare had hit further south we would have lost a few satellites .

A few years back 2009 Quebec Canada lost power for a week ,the biggest ever 1859 solar flare melted telegraph cables knocking out communications right across the U.S back then there was no electronics imagine what a similar flare would do today.
As we approach sunspot maxima next year the threat to satellites is extremely real.

To have a backup on a sat much further away from the one used makes perfect sense to me.

I have tried these channels in the UK but no joy at all. However I have also tried in Southern Spain and can confirm what Toby69 said. They are scrambled but very very occasionaly go free to air for a short time.

                    ----------------------------------------
chns perhaps, every now and then on air just as a test! to check all ok as a back up system.

There are also a couple of Ch 5 regional listings on the spot 1 beam at 11.664 V
Unfortunately unless you can open Power Vu you will not be able to see them either.

                      Regards Mobley

If the channels belong to the Ministry of Defence then they wont be visible on a normal satellite receiver. Even if they are visible, they wont be receiveable but as Toby has given an example that they are free to Air from time to time. I think digicon is right that they are backup channels for the UK.

The 3 "Region 2A, 3A & 5A Ch5" channels show up as NETWORK on my system but the encryption provider shows as Unknown, The channel name says dummEventName. I have spent some time looking into this as I always used to watch loads of channel on 27.5 including the defunct Filmnet. As mentioned above The Ch 5 are encrypted with PowerVu and most of the others use BISS. Various channels say they are in the clear like BBC Alba, BBC Red button, 302 and The Space but the screen is black but the snr is 92% and Agc is 89%. I have checked this sat most nights over the last 6 months or so and never seen anything. Probably is a backup sat. The cost of this will be outrageous; no wonder the UK TV licence is so high!!

If you wan't to keep testing have you put in the video and audio pids? Most of the channels probably won't have them in.
