    Re: what is linux??

Linux is an operating system, it's used on pc's as well.
There are 2 types of linux receivers. Closed source and open source.
    Blade unfortunately, is closed source.

to a newbie all this sounds confusing but you soon learn here,
your box blade, although non-linux you can still enter lines etc, which will open many channels.
shinoxl, take one step at a time, much to learn.
      good luck.
Do not send me iptv/cline requests,

technical or iptv/cline server questions in PM!

      I will not answer!

when you say unfortunately closed source? i mean what are its limitations? is the box obsolete? are there better ones on the market?

          Re: what is linux??

Linux is, in simplest terms, an operating system. It is the software on a computer that enables applications and the computer operator to access the devices on the computer to perform desired functions. The operating system (OS) relays instructions from an application to, for instance, the computer's processor. The processor performs the instructed task, then sends the results back to the application via the operating system.

Explained in these terms, Linux is very similar to other operating systems, such as Windows and OS X.

But something sets Linux apart from these operating systems. The Linux operating system represented a $25 billion ecosystem in 2008. Since its inception in 1991, Linux has grown to become a force in computing, powering everything from the New York Stock Exchange to mobile phones to supercomputers to consumer devices.

As an open operating system, Linux is developed collaboratively, meaning no one company is solely responsible for its development or ongoing support. Companies participating in the Linux economy share research and development costs with their partners and competitors. This spreading of development burden amongst individuals and companies has resulted in a large and efficient ecosystem and unheralded software innovation.

Over 1,000 developers, from at least 100 different companies, contribute to every kernel release. In the past two years alone, over 3,200 developers from 200 companies have contributed to the kernel--which is just one small piece of a Linux distribution.

This article will explore the various components of the Linux operating system, how they are created and work together, the communities of Linux, and Linux's incredible impact on the IT ecosystem.

To put it that way, an open box like enigma receiver offers much more in terms of emulator and updates.

It's a bit tricky to learn at first but after that, it's all pleasure

              hi

no, has nothing to do with obsolete ; an open linux box can work as server, you can put other images on it, can set prios to your lines, ... but basically you get the same channels as a client box (= closed linux) ; I only have a clientbox atm and are very pleased ; so no worries: you won't miss anything once you get the lines working.

                Re: what is linux??

Linux is an operating system for digital devices which is made on system5 based kernel. Linux is open source software, so you always can get sources, modify it, compile and make new software.
People from DM just got the kernel from _kernel.org, wrote sat device drivers and GUI and placed inside the cut-off PC and called it "Linux satellite receiver".
Someone wrote CCCAM, MgCAMD and many other plugins for Linux based receivers.
It means that these plugins may work on each of these receivers.
If you have Dreambox, openbox or even GI 8120 you can install fresh version of CCCAM there.
On the other hand you can see Non-open source receivers
Like, I don't know, DrHD or something else.
This "Blade receiver" is a same IMHO.
They may have an ability to work with CS, for it's a demand of a market, but there will not be a "CCCAM" for this receiver.
                That is a difference.
I don't say linux better receivers works better than non-open source receivers. But Linux based devices (open source) are more flexible.

                    Re: what is linux??

Open source means anyone under license can develop the software, resulting in more choice.
A number of images, skins, plugins, etc to choose from.
my personal favourite being the 1channel vod plugin.
Btw mate, absolutely nothing wrong with a blade 7000. It's a 1st class receiver.
I was going to get one, but needed a twin tuner so plumbed for a vu+ duo instead.
Blade 7000 is probably the best stb for a newbie..
                    Read up, learn and enjoy.

As a end user no need to worry about what's under the bonnet, I bet you already have somethings in your home which uses linux, just have fun and watch.

But having a open linux box means that the chance of it becoming obsolete is less because enthusiast will carry on with support even when manufacturers stop and patches and fixes come quicker. Although it would be a little harder to set up first time round.
