    Best receiver

Ok here's a question. I am looking for a new receiver and i want to ask your advice as to which you all think would be the best. I have a list of must haves and also a list of wishes.

    Must Have:
    HD
the ability to stream media files (avi etc) directly from pc via ethernet
    easy to use

    Wishlist:
    relatively inexpensive
    pvr
    internet browser.

this receiver probably doesnt exist but i thought i would try.

what i wish to do is replace my DM500s & playon mini hd (media player) with one box.

    thanks in advance

    Re: Best receiver

Dream box or vu+ are probably regarded as the best out there.
so you want to stream from your pc to your stb? Not sure about that one.
But as for all the other requirements, these 2 receivers can meet them.

      Re: Best receiver

bokkie is spot on. Vu+ or dreams are the most popular and much supported boxes. I would suggest to wait til December when the Vu+Solo2 and Duo2 are out. They might be very pricy and in the beginning they wont have much support available online. But the rest of that family might get cheaper.
Tip: Always buy a receiver for which you can get help and support easily.

I doubt they'll get much cheaper to start with, maybe middle of next year we'll see prices start to go down, but immediately i dont think so.

Have a look at a dm800se clone, if you want dual tuner then look at a vu+ duo (or the clone, which costs about £200).

Also consider that vu+ are releasing the twin tuner module soon which would make an uno a twin tuner. This would be a great option in my opinion as the uno is better specced and better looking than the duo.
Do you require a twin tuner?

No i don't require a twin tuner as all my recording will be done via my sky hd, just want it for other satellites and ideally streaming. You would have thought as you can get media players that stream files directly from a pc via ethernet that it wouldn't be too difficult to build a sat box that is capable of doing it as most of them can play these files via usb connection

Clones wont be a good idea as already has discussed in another thread. The best to buy an original. But it from Europe and a Vu+ Duo would cost about £230 with the recent exchange rate.

If you don't require twin tuners then a vu+ solo, vu+ uno, or a dm 800se would be the way to go.
There might be a plugin that allows you to stream from pc to stb, I'm just not sure.

For a budget open source linux receivers Giga Blue HD and Amiko Aliens are also good options. You get everything in these receivers offered by a dreambox. They are origional and cheap.

                    Re: Best receiver

Only problem I've heard of with gigablue is the very slow BCM chipset and processor. It takes over 2 minutes to boot from deep standby.
                    I'd go with a vu+ solo (£180), vu+ uno (£240) or the dm 800se (£160).
My personal preference would be the uno as it's really well specced and has the option of making it into a twin tuner.
Just stay away from vu+ clones as they are having problems with the psu.

I must admit i have heard good things about the vu+ solo and nothing about the GiGaBlue but i am also hearing good things about the azbox elite. does anyone know anything about this box?

                        Re: Best receiver

Sorry, don't know much about the azbox. But as far as support goes, vu+ and dreambox are probably the best supported. This has proved invaluable to me in getting my vu+ duo up and running.
Not only that, i reckon they probably have the widest choice of plugins, etc as well.

That is what seems to let it down, which is why I think the dm800se or vu+ solo are better options as they cost about the same.
i'm really tempted to get a vu+ ultimo with the prices dropping so much in the past few months.
Reckon I'll wait to see what happens with the vu+ solo2 and duo2 when they come out.
