Smart TV apps

Hello,

I am looking for a new tv from Samsung and there are some models with sat tuner build in.

These TV can connect to the internet and can run apps.

Do you think that an unofficial app could run an emu and use c-line?

The unofficial firmware from Sammygo would be a good start.

What do you think?

There are a few models around with Freesat HD and Satellite Tuner HD built in. The smart TVs are still in its initial stages and you can't install any applications on them except the ones which are offered in their firmware from the makers. Or may be an open source?
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Would need to be an open source platform, and even then it would need to have the right hardware. if I am not wrong.

I've got a Samsung Smart t.v (not sat tuner) and you only get apps that Samsung provide there are some good apps on there like BBC iplayer but for the purpose you are thinking of no.

indeed samygo can do mush with your tv
unfortunately i upgraded my tv before i found samygo
so i can't do mush now
so if you buy a new tv don't upgrade its firmware
and maybe register on _http://forum.samygo.tv/
and ask them about its doable

I didn't know about LG tv. It's interesting.

Samsung's hack seems a bit more difficult. It's like a jailbreak for ipad

If it was possible it would be great, but would take all the fun out of it for me.
I really enjoy the receiver side of this new hobby of mine, so think I'd stick with the tried and tested method.

FYI: I know someone with a Philips TV with build in DVB-S2 tuner, it has also a CI-slot ; works but picture quality isn't as good as a real HD receiver. I believe picture quality will (or must be) better with a receiver (also more options regarding soft and updates).

The sat tuner on tv is really a bonus for me as I allready own a vu+ solo.

It's always good to have more sources to choose from.

I have a DVB-S2 tuner on my TV. Never got the fun out of it because the its not very user friendly. I just use it for Freesat although I dont need Freesat and already have got Free-2-View from sky. As like bokkie I also enjoy the peoper receiver.

Why not use a 'dumb' tv with raspberry pi for internet and xbmc and include Ariva 102e mini for sat . Both can be attached to rear of tv out of sight .

Smart tv is more advanced with the electronics onboard. I allready have a sat box and laptop, so I don't need a DIY TV

A computer with a sat card will never replace a proper sattelite receiver, doesn't matter if its a Respberry pi or a Mac Book Pro. The computers are not made for this purpose. The receivers are serving their purpose well. There will be a big difference in the picture and sound quality.

I certainly agree that a computer of any type with dvb card is not a suitable and reliable Satellite receiver replacement . I've tried Progdvb , Dvbviewer and Mediaportal among others , hence my suggestion of Ariva102e mini which is a standalone Satellite receiver small enough to conceal behind a TV . The added suggestion of Raspberry Pi was mentioned in order to save a very large wad of cash , versus the purchase cost of 'smart' TV . 'Smart' TV's are inhibited by the firmware installed . Not as many modders / devolopers will have the interest in STV's as do with Raspberry Pi .
