FOX to launch free-to-air Spanish channel

Gearing up to give Univisión a run for its money, FOX International Channels and the RCN Television Group (RCN), headquartered in Colombia, will soon launch MundoFox, a new Spanish-language free-to-air television network catering to the U.S. Hispanic market.
The network is scheduled to launch during the autumn season of 2012 in Hispanic homes nationwide and will offer a range of programming that will be analogous to the English FOX Network. The company wants to provide an alternative for the 50+ million Latino viewers who, it says, "currently have limited options" in Spanish-language broadcast television.
“There is an increasing demand for quality Spanish-language content in the U.S. from both viewers and advertisers," said Hernán López, President & CEO of Fox International Channels. He noted that the English version of FOX was launched for similar reasons, into a market that only offered three main networks, PBS and a range of local UV options: "FOX saw similar dynamics in play 25 years ago when it launched the FOS network."
RCN has provided the main Hispanic networks in the U.S. with much of their primetime content for over two decades. "We now plan to maximise our capabilities and bring an increasing variety of fresh and innovative productions directly to Spanish-speaking viewers," said Gabriel Reyes, CEO of RCN.
Fox International recently launched other new offerings for the U.S. Hispanic consumer: FOX Deportes, Utilísima and NatGeo Mundo. MundoFox will be more general-purpose.
Content for the network will come from several diverse sources, including: RCN Television S.A., the top broadcaster in Colombia; Fox International Channels for original programmes; FOX Deportes for sports; Shine Group for reality programming; NTN24 for news. Additionally, MundoFox will license and/or commission original programmes and movies from a variety of third-party producers, both from the English-language world as well as Spanish.
Although distribution is currently being established, MundoFox has plans to be carried on stations covering 75% of US households. The network currently has several affiliate deals being finalised in top Hispanic markets across the country, News Corp said.
