In what may be a portent of trouble to come for all online video operators, Canal + Spain has admitted piracy problems over contents distributed on the internet.
The pay-TV broadcaster introduced its program for 2012 as "year one" of its new strategy, based on offering quality content over all possible platforms, including through the Internet.
Competing in Spain with pirate sites that offer free movies is a big challenge for operators such as Canal+ said CEO of Content Canal +, Alex Martinez Roig. “We cannot be measured against 'Yonkis Series' against other offer or pirate. This happens because we are within this system and this system is being hacked."
Last year Canal+ Spain launched Canal+ Yomvi along with telco Jazztel, the portal that allows subscribers to Canal + viewing any content on the platform from the PC or mobile devices when they want. In this regard, Roig indicated that, unlike the pages pirates, Canal+ has to negotiate with rights owners to set standards for the exploitation of these contents and such agreements can place limitations when compared with the pirate sites that do not respect the law.
"We in the legal world, we are entering the digital exploitation, compared with people who do not have these limitations, we leave now losing, but we gain in quality, reliability, demand, and little by little we will be gaining territory", the manager assured, who at the same time stressed that Canal + TV "is better prepared to make a good offer legal on the Internet, while recognizing that it is a time that this is also complicated.
"In this new strategy of Canal +, "the satellite is part of the offer," said Roig explained, and the goal is that "the subscriber is consuming what he pays for and he decides…We are abandoning a way of consuming television-and-entering a new era, and right now anything goes."
Among the content that the platform will provide in 2012 will be football and that in addition to La Liga matches offered on multiple channels of the platform, the offering will include the Barcelona-Atletico Madrid and Barcelona-Valencia games and, most significantly, 2012 will be the year of the return of the Champions League to Canal+ as well as the English Premier League, Bundesliga as well as the NBA, tennis, golf and rugby.
