The Spanish government has ruled out the possibility of going back to including advertising on national public broadcaster TVE to compensate for cutting this year's budget by 200 million euros to 1,000 million euros.
TVE's board of directors have complained this amount is not enough and there should be alternative ways to compensate for it.
Spain's Parliament recently approved the reduction of TVE's budget by an urgent decree due to the economic crisis. However, the government believes TVE must strengthen its own production, as well as regional centres, in addition to adjusting the budget and make other goals for the chain.
A government spokesman told news agency Europa Press that the budget adjustment was necessary. "I do not mean to change the model [of TVE], but to adjust and update an extraordinary situation to the current reality," he assured.
