Saw this posted on another forum - copied here in case it helps

Reasons not to buy a clone:

        - The hardware is crap. It's the cheapest you can get therefore it will not work very long and it's unstable.
        - some hardware components are completly missing in a clone box and you will get problems caused by this.
        - you can not use newest software and plugins with it and have to stick with old *hacked* software from years ago.
        - you don't have warranty. If you have a hard- or software problem with it, no one can help you.
        - Simply don't buy it. You will have a lot of problems with it and it's unstable. You will not be happy with it very long.

Personally, I would forget dreamboxes and clones altogether and look for a cheaper "original" like the ET9000 or ET5000, or one of the VU+ models.

There are lots of excellent, better priced, alternatives to "dreamboxes" these days.

as sonc says, myself i would agree upto a certain point, firstly i would never buy a clone as this as what dolly the sheep (a few years ago) was, or i dont know if some people are old enough to remember this, a famous guitar, the les paul, was also copied called the les paul copy, was also crap to the original, the clone is probably manufactured using less expensive componants so its never going to be as good an reliable.
as to other boxes, heard some good reviews, but in the end its a personal choice.

If you want an original (compatiable with Dreambox),
              then go for VU+.
A single tuner or a 2 tuner version is available.
Much cheaper than an original Dreambox and works more or less on the same operating system.

                Hello,

Clarke-Tech 5100HD and VU+ solo : Does it do the same as a Dreambox?

Can I stream to my PC and watch TV on it? Can I control the box from my PC? Does it use the same software as the dreambox?

                Just to be sure,

                Thanks

                  Re: dreambox

I have 2 clone DM800se's and a VU+ Duo and now awaiting my VU+ Ultimo and i can say for the clones had 1 over a year and the other about 4 months and both have been spot on no issues what so ever.

Reasons not to buy a clone:

                  - The hardware is crap. It's the cheapest you can get therefore it will not work very long and it's unstable.
                  - some hardware components are completly missing in a clone box and you will get problems caused by this.

                  - Simply don't buy it. You will have a lot of problems with it and it's unstable. You will not be happy with it very long.
and that is a years old quote which is just bollox my clones are using original drivers and original plugins without issue, infact there is more support for clones image wise than what there is for the originals.

All i have to say make your own mind up dont let anyone else make it for you.

Hi Digicon good last post, just been browsing Vu postings they seem to have a lot going for them . It looks to me that they are on level footing with Dreambox.Would it be easier for me to use since it is loaded via usb same as my Spiderbox .

there is only a slight difference between the VU,Xtrend etc and the DM's where yes you are correct on the VU you load an image via USB.

On the DM you have to have it connected via an Ethernet cable and flash via your browser, But there are front end programs which make this very easy indeed.

All other tasks like FTP and telnet sessions are identical on both sets of receivers basically because as you are aware they both run Enigma2 linux software.

Which ever one you may buy you will still need to use FTP and telnet commands on the odd occasion, But please dont let this put you off as i said earlier and on previous posts there are many front end programs that work through windows which will make life easy for you.

Hi digicon thanks once again for your input, each time I read posts like yours it helps me build more of an insight into what i will eventually go for and gives me confidence to try something a little more complex (well to me anyway) Cheers...

Not Again is there no model safe from cloning? Probably best to get one from wellknown source...

Like digicon, I have 2 clones.
                              A DM800HD and DM800se.
They are working nicely and no problems here.
Just use your box (whichever you go for) in multiboot mode for testing images on the external flash.
Leave the image on the internal flash with a minimum of addons.
