which satellite am i pointing at ????

hi people,
can anyone please tell me how i can find out which satellite i am pointing at, i originally put my motorised dish up and got a signal, and left it at that but i only get the one satellite and don't know which one it is.
so today i want to set my motor up properly so i need to know where i am at now.
any help would be greatly appreciated !! many thanks in advance

hard to tell usually people point to 1 of the southmost satellites
aka 1west or 5 east to setup from there
but try to see which free channels you can receive
then look at _www.lyngsat.com and see about you can find them

slimmmy1971, i have installed bruvs motor to day, you should always make sure your polar mount is 100% vertical using spirit level if not you will never get anywhere with other sats, if going the motor route you should always start at 1 west with a good strong fta transponder number, then take it from there,

If you let us know some of the channels you are receiving and on what frequencies it will be easy to work out.

You could also look for yourself on kingofsat or lyngsat.

sorry forgot, as vimmers says lyngsat.com, you can also try flysat.com, lot of info on there, e.g. latest fta chns on all sats.

First off your mount or pole what ever your motor is connected to has to be 100% straight with a spirit level as toby69 rightly stated.

next find your true south position and point the dish and motor that way exactly tighten up and then go to your box and send your dish to 1 west see what the signal is like if poor go back to the motor and adjust the motor on the pole from side to side and also your dish elevation as well until you have a good signal.

tighten up again and check the rest of the satellites on the ARC also not forgetting that you have put your longitude and latitude in the receiver.

you should now be picking up a few satellites.

You may be sure you caught the sat only if you see the signal from the sat. This signal is beamed from transponder, transponder has a frequency. Scan the frequency you have. You will have some channels.
Go to Lyngsat.com, like Vimmers adviced.Try to find the frequency you scanned on some satellites. Compare channels you got and those on lyngsat.
And wooarela - now you know the sat name

An easy way to find what sat you are pointing at, if your box has a info button ,press it it will tell you the freq, polarisation etc.

perhaps a scan search might help an if his motor not set right on 1west with correct long/lat, he can try dishpointer.com for long/lat settings

Well we will never know as it seems to be installed incorrectly anyway as it appears not to be tracking the ARC

And you never set a motor up and tell people to point at a satellite either 1 west or 5 east either, your first priority is to make sure that the dish and motor attached to a pole or whatever mount you have are aligned spot on straight then point you dish to you near enough true south position as i explained earlier.

then tighten up go down to your receiver and then turn the dish through the reciever to either 1 west etc... then you realign from there.

slimmy1971, what digicon says is right, you must be 100% vertical with your mount, attach motor an dish to pole, using receiver goto 0.08w, and then re-adjust your dish on a fta live transponder number as these fta numbers are usally very strong signals. hope you get on ok. you can then goto sats using long/ lat, or as i like to do is using move/steps onto other sats

I know this is not very technical, assuming that your alignment is correct, but have a look around your neighbour's houses and look which direction their Sky dishes are pointing. This just may give you some indication which direction your dish is pointing.

That would not be acurate enough,you would have to find out if they are just pointing at sky, they could be tuned in to other sats,that is if he is in the UK,
between 13 degree's and say 28 degree's it would be hard to tell by looking at someone's dish then turning round and setting up your dish will be very hard,but with a bit of luck you may manage it.

But he could be back at where the question started, what sat is my dish pointing at.
