German pay-TV operator Sky Deutschland has chosen international technology company NDS to enable its new Sky Anytime push video-on-demand (VOD) service.
The offering was launched in August 2011 for satellite subscribers equipped with digital video recorder (DVR) Sky+ and will be available for all Sky+ customers later this year.
Enabled by NDS' MediaHighway set-top-box (STB) software, Sky Anytime provides Sky+ customers with on-demand content including selected movies from their subscribed film packages as well as entertainment and sports programmes accessible at no extra charge.
The content is sent to the Sky+ hard disc overnight, the majority of which is available in HD. Each day, a new selection of content is available through Sky Anytime for instant playback including blockbuster releases from premium VOD service Sky Select.
At the occasion of the Sky Anytime launch, NDS and Sky Deutschland have enhanced the look and feel of the Sky Guide, the electronic programme guide (EPG) for all Sky Deutschland set-top boxes. According to NDS, the design upgrade will enable a more intuitive user experience and provides access to advanced features such as the new push VOD service.
In addition to MediaHighway, Sky Deutschland uses several other NDS solutions including VideoGuard content protection, XTV DVR technology and an EPG - all of which provide the basis for the introduction of the new Sky Anytime service.
