KI.KA, the children's channel jointly operated by German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, will launch a high-definition simulcast of its service in May 2012.
This was announced by ZDF's general director Markus Schächter at the latest meeting of the broadcaster's supervisory board in Mainz.
KI.KA HD will use capacity on Astra (19.2° East) vacated following the switch-off of analogue satellite television in Germany on 30 April 2012.
At the occasion of its 15 year anniversary in 2012 KI.KA will also adopt a new on-air design next year which is meant to besser target its core audience of young viewers. The channel will also introduce new information programmes in 2012 such as a reports show dealing with environmental and sustainability issues.
