Premier League games can be shown on foreign decoders

A pub landlady has won the latest stage of her fight to air Premier League games using a foreign TV decoder.

Karen Murphy had to pay nearly £8,000 in fines and costs for using a cheaper Greek decoder in her Portsmouth pub to bypass controls over match screening.

But she took her case to the European Court of Justice.

The ECJ now says national laws which prohibit the import, sale or use of foreign decoder cards are contrary to the freedom to provide services.

The decision could trigger a major shake-up for the Premier League and its current exclusive agreements with Sky Sports and ESPN, and pave the way to cheaper viewing of foreign broadcasts for fans of top-flight English games.

However, whereas the decision opens up opportunities for individuals to watch overseas broadcasts at home, it remains unclear whether in future games can be shown in pubs using foreign decoders and broadcasts, as the ruling also threw up a number of copyright issues.

Re: Premier League games can be shown on foreign decoders

This story really only applies for the UK only as the EU countries already have far better EPL coverage than we do in the UK, And what i mean by this is the golden 3pm kick off rule which cannot be shown legally in the UK.

This court ruling only means that Pubs and Clubs are now no longer tied into paying a massive subscription price from Sky Uk and can now legally obtain a cheaper subscription from other EU countries.

What the news article still does not state is that the 3pm Kick off rule still applies which means that no commercial premises Pub's, Bar's, Club's will be able to show live 3pm games.

This ruling for the 3pm kick off does not apply to the individual of course who will be able to legally obtain the same games as an EU provider can show.

the landlady should have used card sharing servers and could have saved extra money

totally agree with you on that point, but it might end up for being a big slap in the face for murdock in time to come.
