Libya's state TV reborn in new colours

An image of the rebel flag is now being broadcast by Libya's state TV network Al-Jamahiriya.

Formerly the mouthpiece of Muammar Gaddafi, Al-Jamahiriya went off air as rebel forces took control of the broadcaster's headquarters in Tripoli on 22 August.

The red, black and green flag, which pre-dates the Gaddafi regime, has now been shown on air with text upon it reading 'Libya satellite' since late afternoon on 25 August, according to BBC Monitoring.

The news came after Libya's Al-Uruba TV station, still loyal to Gaddafi, broadcast what was believed to be a new audio speech by the hunted former leader, addressing supporters in his home town of Sirte and Tripoli.

"We must resist these enemy rats, who will be defeated thanks to the armed struggle," Gaddafi was quoted as saying by AFP.

Meanwhile, four Italian journalists kidnapped by Gaddafi loyalists in Libya on Wednesday have been released without harm. Their driver, however, was shot dead during the abduction.
