ASTRA 1N’s primary mission is to complement the existing and future ASTRA fleet at orbital position 19.2° East for 15+ years. Before moving to its final destination at 19.2°E, the satellite will support an interim mission at 28.2°E, where it will provide coverage for the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Unfortunately footprint is not much good for Europe. It seems to be only for UK.

I don't understand, is this a new satellite? And at 19.2e how does it relate to 28e as mentioned above?

As said above, it will perform a *temporary* service at 28.2 before being moved towards 19.2. There is urgent demand for more transponders on 28.2 and until the bird which will permanently (15 years) resolve that is launched (astra 2f, scheduled for Q4 2012), this one has to perform as a stand in.

On 28.2 it will cover most of western europe with signal strong enough for a 80cm dish. The footprint in de graphic above only shows the reception area's for 40cm and 60cm dish. The 80cm boundary extends well into western Poland down to Croatia.

Once on 19.2 the footprint will be completely different.

usually you can find all current changes in ASTRA channels on _www.onastra.com . Just follow the "how to receive" button, drag the marker to your location and choose a satellite. Then you can view the channel list

Or if you dont want to wait for SES to update their own lists the hobby community normally picks up satellite changes in a few hours.

at 28.2° east, has a footprint focused tightly on the British Isles, making reception difficult in large areas of mainland Europe.
Most of the transponders are used to provide television services available on the Sky and Freesat platforms to the British Isles.
Although the satellite's footprint is tightly focused on the United Kingdom and Ireland, surrounding countries have the ability to pick the signal up (dependent on suitably sized satellite dishes satlovers).

Hopefully the valve abnormality can be resolved fairly soon, Arianespace said they were to make a press release this morning (presumably local time to French Guyana) so with a bit of luck we might get some good news today or tomorrow.

Launch Of ASTRA 1N Satellite Postponed Until Late July

Luxembourg, July 4th 2011. - SES S.A. (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG), announces that the launch of its new ASTRA 1N satellite has been postponed due to an anomaly that occurred during the final launch count-down on July 1st, 2011.

Following the anomaly detected on Friday during the launch attempt, Arianespace has decided to replace the valve of the EPC (the main cryogenic stage), which did not function nominally. In order to carry out this operation, the Ariane 5 ECA launch vehicle has been rolled back into the Final Assembly Building (BAF). The valve's replacement and the ensuing operations should require approximately 20 days.

Arianespace will reschedule the launch shortly.

The launch vehicle and its payload, the ASTRA 1N and the BSAT-3c/JCSAT-110R satellite are maintained in fully safe conditions.

ASTRA 1N is scheduled for launch on board an Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou, French Guiana. The new ASTRA satellite was built by Astrium in Toulouse, France, and is intended to first provide interim replacement capacity at the orbital location of 28.2° East. The satellite will subsequently be moved to 19.2° East, from where it will mainly serve the German, French and Spanish markets.

The launch of Arianespace Flight 203 has been postponed due to the unfavourable weather conditions over the launch pad in Kourou, French Guiana. Flight 203 will place into geostationary transfer orbit the ASTRA 1N and BSAT-3c/JCSAT-110R telecommunications satellites.

Another launch date will be decided depending on the evolution of the weather conditions in Kourou.

Great lift-off this evening. I'm glad it finally got off the ground after such a long delay, third time lucky as they say!!

Looking like mid September for commercial service. 3B was up and running in about 4wks from launch so expect this is feasible.
