Mobile Broadband through a dongle

Is it possible to use a mobile broadband dongle on any of the sky boxes so a person would be able to watch all sky channels without home broadband.

So for example, If they purchased a skybox f5 and they plugged in the USB dongle and with a 1gb allowance and also hooked it up to the dish, would that work and how long would the 1gb allowance last them if they used it solely for the box?

Could go on Three all you can eat data plan.

1GB is enough for a month or longer. The only defect is often blocked ports in mobile broadband. If only do you want to connect to the server there is no problem. If you want to start the server to check open ports to connect to the outside.

Problem is stability. You need a stable connection with a good ping time, which 3g normally battles to achieve. In optimum conditions it would work, but you need a good ping and stable connection.

As far as stability is not a problem. Ping for 3G is around 300ms. In more than enough to watch tv. As the server may a little too slow. If the signal quality is too low, you can buy an antenna. I also recommend 3G/LTE modems, routers like tp-link 3220 with openwrt software.

Stability depends on the current cell.
I live in a country so I use 3g dongle to connect to internet and CS services too. Last year it worked far from OK - freezes and so.
I don't know what they set up this year, but CS works close to perfect. Freezes are only when our CS providers rebooting their servers.

300 ms is to high. You would need a near perfect server to get watchable tv with such a high ping.
If your ecm times went over about 250 ms you'd have glitching and freezing.

You can use mobile broadband, just do some research and find which provider is best in your area.
I'm quite lucky in my area, 10mb download and ping under 100ms with three.

you can try it if you have a good ping but problems will always be much more than if you use a cable.

why don't you go for a 4g dongle should work better with less freezes.

First you should discover what is max ecm time without freezes for the provider you are interested in (because they are not all the same).
Is ecm time is > 1.000 ms you will have no problems with a 3g dongle.
If you need a faster response you could try an hsdpa dongle, provided that telecom operator is covering your area with hsdpa.
Last, if you have neighbors with home broadband you can set up a wireless bridge with them, and share the monthly fees.
This last option requires a clear sight of view between the two points, i.e. no obstacles in the middle (buildings, trees, mountains) and can go up to 5-6 kms with commercial and cheap wifi routers.
