This may be a late response, but the (real) network costs for handling text messages is next to nothing.

In the beginning of the Mobile communications era, sending text messages was free of charge, since the technology was intended for maintnance purposes untill some hackers found out about it.

When it became populair the network operators saw some amount of money to be made in this small 'accident'.

I'm working with local operators (KPN, T-Mobile & Vodafone) which have their own network to use their network directly when sending to their clients. This saves money for me and eliminates the use of a middleman. The only downside is that i need to set-up my own SMSC Server. This is a pain in the arse since it requires quite an amount o technical knowledge about mobile communications and the underlying systems.
