Fastsatfinder is very useful . If you have wireless headphones , you can adjust dish outside while listening to signal strength / quality .

In my recent experience, Dishpointer etc are very useful for approximate locating satellites but you will still need some form of compass (the app versions weren't that useful) and a signal meter is invaluable.

Mine cost £5ukp and helped me do the job in minutes after having spent hours looking at the wrong bird.

Actually re-reading your post I think you mean dish positioning, as in movement, rather than initial setup?

myth tv ___http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/DVB-S seems to have the capability but may not work with your setup. As you say the s/ware is weak generally but I'll defer to the knowledgeable people who know this area. Good luck!

There are two thing really helpful. They might not be for DVB cards but they work well with the receivers. One of them is a small app for Iphone/Android phones called sat finder.
The other is a small analogue device called Sat signal finder. You connect the device between the receiver and the LNB and when the Dish is in line with a satellite, the device beeps.
Its costing about a fiver on flea bay.
