Kaffeine - KDE Media Player (Linux)

Kaffeine - KDE Media Player (Linux)

Kaffeine is a media player for Unix-like (linux) operating systems running KDE. By default it uses xine-lib media framework but also supports GStreamer. It also supports the use of MPlayer project's binary codecs for proprietary formats. Kaffeine developers have also produced a Mozilla plugin to start the player for streaming content over the web.
Features include streaming, DVB, DVD, Video CD and CD audio.

    Kaffeine 1.2.2 released
Updated (2011-04-17): 1.2.2 fixes a crash after removing channels.
    Updated (2011-04-05): 1.2.1 fixes a DVB-S2 tuning regression.

    Changelog (1.2):
    - add search function to epg
    - implement ATSC support for epg
    - fix gnome screen saver inhibition
    - other fixes and improvements ...

    FAQ:
    1. Kaffeine doesn't start. What can i do?
Please check first whether another instance of kaffeine is already running and kill it if necessary (e.g. run "killall -KILL kaffeine" in a terminal or use your favourite process manager).

    2. Is it possible to view teletext with kaffeine?
Not yet, but you can use an external prog like mtt (from xawtv) to display teletext while using kaffeine.

    3. How can i run the wizard again?
Launch "kaffeine -w" from a terminal.

    4. Where can i find the mozilla/firefox plugin?
In a separate package now. Download and install kaffeine-mozilla. Follow the instructions in the README file.

    5. I got the error 'No plugin found to handle this resource'. Where can i get more plugins?
Nowhere. Make sure you've installed the newest xine-lib and the win32 codecs from the mplayer project.

    6. How can i play WMV/Quicktime/Real Media files?
Again: Download the latest win32 codecpack from _www.mplayerhq.hu and copy all files to /usr/lib/win32.

    7. Why don't Kaffeine play my DIVX files?
Some distributions dropped xine's divx support for licence reasons. Install xine-lib from _http://www.xinehq.de.

    8. How can i play encrypted DVD's?
You have to install libdvdcss (_http://www.videolan.org/libdvdcss).
The use of this library may hurt copyright restrictions of some countries.

    9. Can i play my avi files with a external subtitle file?
Yes. Subtitle files with sub, smi, srt, asc, ssa or txt extensions will be autoloaded. Use the playlist context-menu to add files manually. During playback you can change the used file in the Player|Subtitles-menu.

    10. I see garbage characters in the titles. What can i do?
Update to current Kaffeine and xine-lib version.

    11. How can i change the AV synchronization?
Open the Videosettings dialog (Player|Video|Videosettings). There is a slider to change the AV Offset.

    12. I get a jerky video on DVD playback. The image sometimes completely freezes.
Make sure your DVD drive is in DMA mode! Try using the xv video-driver. Maybe running 'kaffeine --wizard' will give you some hints.

    13. I got a thin lacing image effect on DVD playback. What can i do?
Press I to activate deinterlace. Press CTRL+I to select the quality level of deinterlacing.

    14. Is there any way to resize kaffeine to the original dimension of the file it plays?
Yes. Use Enable Auto Resize in the View-menu. Shortcuts are ALT+0/1/2/3.

    15. Does kaffeine support LIRC?
Yes. You can use the kaffeine.profile.xml file together with the klirc module of KDE 3.2, which also provides a simple config dialog.

    16. Is there a possiblity to control kaffeine with my multimedia-keyboard?
Yes. You can use LinEAK together with Kaffeine's DCOP interface. For example assign the command dcop kaffeine KaffeineIface next to the next-button. Enter dcop kaffeine KaffeineIface and dcop kaffeine KaffeinePartIface to get all available DCOP functions.

    17. How can i use my own logo animation?
Put your file into ~/.kde/share/apps/kaffeine and rename it to logo (without extension). Restart Kaffeine.

    18. I tried to make a screenshot of my desktop. Why is the video output not visible?
By default Kaffeine uses the hardware accelerated xv video-driver. Switch to the (slower) xshm driver to make video output visible.

    19. How can i translate kaffeine into my own language?
Please write to the mailing list (doesn't matter which one) if you're interested in translating kaffeine.

    20. I have a DVB device but Kaffeine does not display DVB features. Why?
    1) make sure your device is recognized and proper drivers are loaded. Check dmesg for DVB messages, if all goes fine it should end with a message like "DVB: registering frontend 0".
    2) check permissions of the device files "/dev/adapterX/*".
    3) start Kaffeine from a shell and look at messages about DVB. If there is no such messages then your Kaffeine version was compiled without DVB support. See README.dvb in sources package.

    21. My DVB device is detected, i have succesfully scanned for channels, but channels names are greyed out. Why?
Live DVB playback only works with the xine engine. Go to Menu->Settings->Engine and choose "Kaffeine-Xine". Then restart Kaffeine. If there isn't any "Kaffeine-Xine" entry, you have to install it: it should be labelled "kaffeine-xine" or similar.

    22. Is there a Kaffeine version for Microsoft Windows?
No, and no plans to do it.

I have never used this DVB media player, but all people says it is the best for Linux and our PC Sat receivers.
If someone known more details, comments will be wellcome.

    Regards.
