I use Arcsoft HD codec, it need less resources from your pc.
So I say to you that your PC Pentium 4 is at limit to see HD Sat tv, I don't know what graphics cards have you got, but I recommend you a HD graphics card with at least 512 Mb dedicated, because your processor will be better because the most important work will do by your GPU graphics card.
      Regards.

Satellite HD TV utilize H264 Compression (aka AVC) for video stream and MPEG1 or AC3 Compression for audio stream. They say that you can find AAC coded audio, but I haven't see no channel with AAC audio.
So to play HD TV on PC you need h264, MPEG,AC3 and AAC codecs installed
If your pc runs under xp or lover MS OS, it hasn't them but MPEG1 audio decoder. So you need to choose and install 3rd party decoder. If you run win7, you will have embedded decoders from MS. They are not fastest ones, but if your PC is fast enough you'll be able to watch HD video.
Your PC is p4 3GHz, single core I guess - CLEAN system (XP just installed by professional)with CoreAVC 2.x or 3.x, AC3Filter and CoreAAC will play HD video or HD TV pretty smooth even if your VGA-card is something like on-board Intel. Hardware accelerated VGA card like NVIDIA can unload your central processor, taking video processing.
In case of win7 with embedded codecs I can't guarantee same results. Video accelerator would help. Anyway better not to expect too much from embedded codecs.

Just try FFMPEG (ffdshow) and see if it works (refer to the first post of this thread). I had similar problems with powerdvd and other codecs but ffdshow works fine for me.

              Thanks

It's a bit late to answer this question but I think the ffdshow is the best choice if you are looking for a free codec!
