Cant set a password for user root

    Hi guys!
This problem driving me crazy. I Cant change root password to what i want. It stays empty. Tried several times thrue putty, dcc and the plugin "change root password". After reboot its blank. The only thing that worked is in tuxbox, changing root: etc etc. Have copied the line for the word "password" witch worked. But i want something else. Any tips why?

Re: Cant set a password for user root

I have always done this in telnet. Enter "passwd" without the " and it will prompt you for your new password.
    Type new password, press enter.
Re enter password and press enter. Job done.

FYI, the Pa$$W0rd needs to be complex.
also make sure not to include some special characters
          - _ and some others cause problems with password.

try setting it to something simple, but follow the rules.

might have wrong end of the stick here when you type your new password you can not see it

after you have changed it do you see the following
            OpenEmbedded Linux dm800

            openpli 2.1 dm800

            dm800 login: root
            root@dm800:~# passwd
            Changing password for root
            New password:
            Retype password:
Password for root changed by root
            root@dm800:~#

Failing that you might have to reflash or delete it using this below never done it myself I got this from elsewere

            if you forgot the password
and your image has no password reset

you need to download via dm800 addons

            a plugin called Tuxcom

            which when installed becomes

            TuxBox Commander

            start TuxBox Commander
            scroll down to var
            OK
            scroll down to etc
            OK
down to passwd and press 4 (edit) ( file name passwd not passwd- )
            OK on first line
            RED to clear line
enter root::0:0:root:/root:/bin/sh with remote buttons like an writing an SMS
            OK
            EXIT
            save YES
            EXIT
            save YES
            EXIT
            EXIT
            EXIT
then login with dcc or telnet ect
            login root

Re: Cant set a password for user root

              Hi mate

Try again the procedure as @peremacedonia said.
You need a pass of 5-8 characters.
It would be better to type both numbers and letters.

I can confirm @coley65 that you can not see the new pass when you type it.
              Maybe this confused you mate.
If you still have problem, maybe the image you have in your box is locked in some way and the only you can do is to reflash your box with a new image that for sure allow you to change the pass.

Im not confused. If people could listen instead! Like i said before, i have typed passwd many times and succesfully changed password!! The thing is the moment after when reconnecting thrue putty/telnet or ftp it´s suddenly blank again.. no password. Im logged in as user root without typing the password.

The only thing that worked is thrue tuxbox, i have ******d the code for password "dreambox" and have manually typed it in var/etc passwd file. "root:$1$$3er43323sBBCAw.ofBbt.:0:0::/:/bin/sh"

After that i have to type the password in putty/telnet dcc / ftp openwebif. I also tried with a friend that gave me the coded row for a password i would like. Same there, now the dreambox has saved it.

So in other words, my dreambox doesnt saves new password if its not typed in via tuxbox.
Thats even after i flashed the box! Same shit!

So can you guys understand my wierd problem now?

so you can log in without a password through telnet

why dont you just reflash it only takes 10mins

can you check the integrity of :

                          /etc/passwd
                          /etc/shadow

also, do you still have free space available:

                          df -h
