    opkg update / opkg upgrade

    Hello guys

Last night I tried to update the TSmedia version on my box and the installation failed, informing me that I have to use the telnet and make an "opkg update" in order to be able to install the new version.

After a quick search I managed to find the correct procedure on how to do that.
I used telnet and typed the command opkg update, hit enter and done!!!

I'm happy that I've done it successfully but I'm a little confiused, because I did something that I didn't know and until now I don't know why and what I've done.

So, I would like to ask you what this command means and also what the another command: opkg upgrade does and what's the use of them.

Re: opkg update / opkg upgrade

"opkg update" is a command to update the list of packages available from the feeds. Excluding this "list refresh", the command did nothing on your system.
If you want to complete the upgrade process, after "opkg update", you must issue "opkg upgrade".
This last command will actually upgrade all packages that need upgrade (it will take some time to complete ...).
Before an "opkg upgrade" I strongly suggest a complete backup of your system !
    Regards

      Hi gianni253

      Thanks for your valuable info

I would to ask you one more question

If I give the command "opkg upgrade", my receiver will be untouched as about the settings and all the plugins that I have now, or the receiver will make something like factory reset by it self?

this opkg mecanism exists in linux, from options of the apt-get command

        there are 3 things:

a.- the package to downloads: pkg.tgz
        b.- the pkg configs : /etc/pkg/files.cfg
        c.- the pkg executables: /opt/pkg/pkg.exe

        - when apt-get update :
        you do only (a)

        - when apt-get upgrade :
you change all the (c) /opt/pkg/pkg.exe
and the kg config (b) (/etc/pkg/files) are not changed

        - when apt-get install pkg :
this re install everything: configs and executables

        detailed doc here:

        __https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AptGet/Howto

        especially here :
        ...

        Maintenance commands

        apt-get update
Run this command after changing /etc/apt/sources.list or /etc/apt/preferences . For information regarding /etc/apt/preferences, see PinningHowto. Run this command periodically to make sure your source list is up-to-date. This is the equivalent of "Reload" in Synaptic or "Fetch updates" in Adept.

        apt-get upgrade
This command upgrades all installed packages. This is the equivalent of "Mark all upgrades" in Synaptic.

        ...
        enjoy

All user data (and settings, of course) will remain untouched.
Plugins will be upgraded and their setting will remain untouched (though some plugins might still need some reconfiguration after upgrade).
But I insist in recommending you a full backup because opkg upgrade is a "strong impact" command, some packages/plugins might get broken, and if you are unable to fix all the issues manually, a full restore is the only option to save your system.
