Safest way to flash DM500 clone without serial cable

Hi everyone, I'd like to flash a racier image onto my DM500 clone.

After watching this video:

hxxp://www.*******.com/watch?v=BovvFtD6Cis I thought it would be the way to go (telnet cd /tmp && eraseall /dev/mtd/3 && cp image.img /dev/mtd/3 && reboot) etc.

But after reading the comments on the video, lots of people are saying it bricked there boxes. (A few say it worked though admittedly).

SO I'm going to forgo that method entirely. So my other options are:

- Flashing through the HTTP interface
- Flashing over the network with DCC

Is this correct? (I'm still waiting to receive my dreambox and dont have, or can easily acquire a null modem cable - if I brick it, I'll have to of course) But want to try the HTTP method first.

Sorry, no answers to your questions from me (I don' have a db), but I you can advise you to get an serial cable anyway (RS232 nullmodem - crossed - best with 2 serial ends if your pc/laptop has one, because not all 'serial to usb-converters' work well). Always a chance that something happens, very handy that you have already the right cable that moment. Just my experience, and if you'll never need it, well even better (just spend some gbp's or euros then)

From my experience, you can just go ahead and flash true webinterface. I do the flashing even over wireless and no problem at all for me. Dreambox iam playing with right now is an dm800 HD clone.

Use Universal DreamUp.
Good if your box is locked (use serial interface) and if your box is responding on lan (use network).
You can't fail with this.

Brilliant thanks for your answers everyone. I think I'll try the web interface method first over lan, and then have a look at universal dreamup.

Will probably invest in a null modem cable anyway at some point, just hard to find that stuff in Spain, so will be an online jobby, but I'm a tight arse, so if I can get the functionality I need without spending more I'm going to try that first!

yes that two options are the best. if you spoil your box that way the primary reason will be a wrong image.

im doing my test on a dm500 too, with the price that a dm500 clone has (30-50 euros) i dont really care if i brick it. i was only warry for the "gift" i use to have on it. Anyway after the gift ended i flash it 2 times using winscp after watching this video hxxp://www.*******.com/watch?v=UGlEE1sEvGA&feature=plcp
one other time i try something else and i got it brick, i couldnt even turn it on, but a friend fix it with a cable in 10 min. Many experts here to help you any time and lot of old post with similar problems in the forum if you search. good luck.
