How to: Convert Dreambox from wired(ethernet port) to wifi (wireless connection)

If you need to get rid of all the wires going to your Dreambox you can buy an ethernet to Wi-fi adapter like this one over here, this would cost about $20 dollars a piece on amazon or ebay.

    Step One:
Connect the dongle to your pc using the usb port and ethernet cable, make sure the adapter is connected to a power outlet.
    Step Two:
Insert the CD into your pc so that the adapter can configure itself to your network i.e router.
    Step three:
Connect the dongle to your dreambox
    Check your connection
    and finally Enjoy

    hi Arbiter

May seem a good solution, but honoustly I still prefer wired solutions (if possible - ref. distances - less chance/risk on future problems) - sorry, just my opinion.

I dont think anyone is disputing the fact that wired is better than a dongle.......after saying that i have been using avonets vap11g wifi bridge for the last 2 years without any issue saved me wiring along a long route.
Just giving this a thumbs up as it does work.

Surely wired connection is better, however at my home, every room has a receiver so it would be hard to run wires all the way from the router to each room, unless each room had a ethernet plug pre-built i.e. before building the house :P - not an option.

Well, you need a wifi network at home, the wifi adapter has two cords, one for the ethernet and the other for power, you connect the power and ethernet cord into the dreambox. Connect your power supply cord into the wifi adapter.
In short, two wires go into the dreambox from the wifi adapter.
and one wire from the power supply into the wifi adapter.

remember this device has a usb wire to configure it to the network before using it for the dreambox. This usb wire is attached to the power cord.

I'd rather use an access point (client mode).
Maybe a little more expensive but more versatile and you can always recycle it as an access point.

How does an 'access point (client mode)' work and what is the difference? What equipment would you recommend?

I am just trying to reduce the amount of cables network cables etc. in my house.

To reduce quantity of wires it is possible to use Wi-Fi a router. To adjust an access point, a wireless network and still to buy USB adapter

I bought 1 of these wireless adaptors, they are rubbish, mine stopped working after a few weeks. some boxes can use normal USB wifi stick, for example ones with rt73 chipset.

An access point is simply a very cheap piece of hardware that you normally use to build a wireless home network.
Note that these devices do not incorporate an adsl modem. They only care about wifi network (and routing traffic, of course).
They can work in "infrastructure mode" (the access point connects to all wifi clients of the network), in "ad hoc mode" (the access point connects to another access point in a peer-to-peer mode) or in "client mode" (the access point connects to your home wifi isp-router and provides network connectivity to an attached device via ethernet cable).
Very hard to explain, very easy to accomplish.
Just look for an access point that can work in "client mode".
                        Some examples:
LinkSys WRT54GL (a legend, but nowadays quite outdated)
                        Asus WL-520gU
                        Tp-Link TL-WR841ND
If the router support custom firmware such as OpenWrt or DD-WRT it's surely a plus, but only if you are skilled enough to deal with this stuff.

so can this configure itself to our network if the pc-laptop is connected wireless to the router?

                              Hello
                              just a quick question:
I use a TP-link access point (range extender) to convert my WIFI (from my mobile phone) to lan onto Dreambox 800hd.
after configuration, dreambox network test cannot find "nameserver" (all the rest in test turn green)...
can anyone tell me if name server is needed as well and how i can put it?
                              thank you very much
