General Question about CAMS

Hi,

Can anyone please let me know what the CAM does exactly?
Can you not just input your viewing card into your receivers cardslot for those channels to be cleared for viewing?
And if not, what CAM should one get as there as sooo many on the market at the moment?

In some cases you can just put your viewing card into the receiver's card slot. That will work if your receiver supports the particular encryption system used by the viewing card provider.

There are lots of encryption systems, (too many to be built into one receiver), so receivers normally have a CI (Common Interface) slot where you can insert a CAM.

The CAM (Conditional Access Module) you choose is one which decrypts the channels or viewing card that you wish to watch.

For example, if your receiver doesn't support (decrypt) Conax, and you have a Conax viewing card, you can buy a suitable Conax CAM to insert into your receiver.

... Then there are some CAM thats supports emulators inside, so those let you watch some channels without insert a card like Diablo2 Cam or Diablo Wi Fi. This last one is able to connect to wireless net and supports also Cccam, so you can use it for share if your box has not Lan connection.
