Introduction

Sometimes the PC is willing but the hard drive is week. In many computer upgrade situations, when you move from one operating system to the next, it's often also a good idea to upgrade your hard drive. While you can always start from scratch with a clean install, recovering your data and your programs is often a long, difficult process. This is where PC Image Clone comes in handy. It’s the right hard drive tool for the right job.

PC Disk Clone is a Windows application that makes it easy to back up a hard drive or one of its partitions to another disk drive. Supported operating systems include Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, and all versions of Linux. After your PC has been backed up, if your system crashes or is ever infected with a virus, you can restore your system by using a PC Disk Tools Recovery CD.

Pros: Full disk and partition imaging, free.

Cons: Speed throttled on free version, Free version won't build a recovery CD.

Conclusion: The application, even the free version, does an adequate job of backing up your hard drive and all of its contents. However, the interface, and the way it kicks everything off, leaves a little to be desired. The main application window is really nothing more than a bunch of links to individual executables.

Compared to similar Mac based applications, those that work with Windows and MBR formatted hard drives seem overly complicated. On the Mac side, with HSF+ formatted drives, it's very easy to clone a drive. Not so on the Windows side. However, PC Image Clone makes it easy to restore the information on any other drive, or on the original drive if needed.
