win7 : Mainstream Support ends January 13, 2015.

Mainstream Support ends January 13, 2015.

Key Products Transitioning from Mainstream Support to Extended Support:

- win 7 will be moving into Extended Support in the next 6 months.

- Extended Support lasts for 5 years and includes security updates at no cost, and paid hotfix support.

Windows 8 and 7 are more or less identical anyway so it is no skin of their back to extend support.

It sounds like mainstream is when it is on general release, but with win8 out now they will end support in 5 years for win7 so it will be classed as extended till is terminated, just like xp, but it is still possible to get updates for XP system even though it stopped in april

Mainstream support usually means that they are still developing the OS, that is why you get service pack updates. Extended support means that there is no further development but security updates are still made available as they become necessary.

Most of the updates that you get are to fill in software defects that are found in the system when someone breeches the program, they have to do a write around to stop your system being compromised.

This is normal,
because win7 maybe is a very good OS but also it's an old OS.

Win8 and win8.1 are on every new PC, laptop and win9 is coming after few months.

Always, we have to look ahead :)

Fortunately, the extended support for win 7 lasts until 2020. I am very satisfied with windows 7 and I won't get rid of it as long as there is extended support. I think, it will be hard to "kill" win 7, harder than the xp.

May be easier than you think, there are quite a few reports to the possibility that Microsoft may decide to offer a free or cheap update to Windows 9. It would make a lot of sense if they only had to offer updates for one OS.Windows 8 has not had a great reception and the fact that they are bringing out a new OS so soon may mean that they do not want a similar backlash to the one created by the demise of XP.

There is a huge difference between 7 and 8, windows 8 uses a lot less resources and is a lot faster than 7.

I work with both, W7 on my work (developing software, so not cheapo hardware) and W8.1 at home and in most cases my pc home is faster.

Startup from unpowered tot ready to use is also way faster with 8 than it was with 7.
