Re: 80 days to go before the end of times
I have now a new pc: it had Windows 8 already installed...it's terrible...
Working a bit I removed a lot of stupid or no-privacy settings, but it's a shame.
Also no more BIOS on pc, so it's impossible what I thought before, to add some other O.S. in a partition...
It's a first issue in my expirience.
Can you write down the make and model for me to check if it's really can't boot from cd/usb?

I'd recommend everyone to try Linux for it's a future. M$ lost. (on PC scene).
I use Ubuntu for about one year. Used windows before(3.1-95-NT-2000-xp). And I can assume linux is enough user friendly. Many information over internet. And about old windows software. M$ try to do like Apple. They want new windows to run only approved software from their online store. So the best choice for running 3rd party windows apps is linux with wine.

I guess this is not the thread to advertise for Linux, its very off-topic.
This is about the end of support for an existing OS (until now)
btw Are you claiming there are still patches being made for the first versions of Linux ?

Why not to advertise linux? What off-topic are you talking about?
End of support of XP means no more security updates, no new drivers. But you can use XP as long as you want on existing hardware. Modern M$ OSes are as far from XP as Ubuntu. But Ubuntu is free, it's a great advantage.
So I'd recommend anyone to try it.
And If you buy a new PC with large memory, it's an easy way to have windows XP along with main OS - VMWare player (free) with XP. VMWare emulates very common hardware so may not afraid of hardware incompatibility. You can run your favourite windows software in virtual system. I even started DVBViewer in virtual XP and burnt some DVDs with IMGBurn. If you won't surf internet from virtual XP you won't need security updates, because you can surf inet from a host system.

Its more like all thos Linux freaks act like if people tell you they have problems with the carradio of their Opel telling them they should buy a peugeot instead of giving the solution for their situation.
Most windows users do not want to swiitch to Linux especially those that tend to stick to old windows versions as long as possible.
