Thunderbird - problems sending emails

I have Thunderbird 24.0 (updated) anda i have lot of problems to send emails.
It take a long time to connect the smpt.gmail.com and then appears the message error says it took too long to connect the smpt.gmail.com and the session expired. Try again or contact your administrator.
What is the problem?

try this:

ping smpt.gmail.com
ping: unknown host smpt.gmail.com

ping smtp.gmail.com
PING gmail-smtp-msa.l.google.com (173.194.78.108) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from wg-in-f108.1e100.net (173.194.78.108): icmp_seq=1 ttl=47 time=27.1 ms
^C

--- gmail-smtp-msa.l.google.com ping statistics ---
1 packets transmitted, 1 received, 0% packet loss, time 0ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 27.141/27.141/27.141/0.000 ms

I will be more likely due to port 21 which must be cut by the ADSL provider

the port 21 stands for ftp 21/tcp

hence the port 25 stands for smtp 25/tcp mail

and similarly, the secure smtp has the port 465
ssmtp 465/tcp smtps # SMTP over SSL

and further more, each smtp server (yahoo, google, ...) may defines his own smpt server port (891 899 ...)

SMTP uses port 25 not port 21....port 21 is used by FTP.
