XP: Create a wifi access point?

Hi,
I try and try and try, and can't make it work.

The origin internet access is done thru a Wifi dongle, i did buy a 2nd dongle with the idea of create a internet access point for connect my PSP, Android tablet, Smartphone etc...
The problem is that xp seem to only create ad-hoc connexion, and what i want is that the 2nd dongle work as an Internet access point, i did bridge connexions , and try almost everything i could see.

Is there some kind of software who will do the work of create a repeater with one USB WIFI dongle who will connect to wifi network and a 2nd dongle who will repeat a stronger signal for smaller devices ?

hi cgac99,

normally you have to use the cd which come with the dongle to setup an internet access point. Which dongle did you buy?

I got a Airties , but drivers are only online, no cd at all. I guess i was naive to thing i could do what i pretend to with XP.
I saw it worked fine on windows 8 , just few clicks and all is ok, but with XP it seem to be another story, unless a master have a solution.

Have you tried using the dongle with any other device that supports hot spot software? i ll make it a bit clearer for you, when using my 3G internet connection on the phone, i can use tethering aka hotspot to share the internet on one device to another - please reply if u need more help/didnt understand - good luck

you'll have to install these 3 apps :Connectify,MyPublicWiFi and MaryFi (free) to create a wifi access point.
Don't forget to put different channel to avoid conflicts and follow the step on the gianni article and it should be ok for you :)

thank's for the help but all these software seem to work only with windows 7 and 8.

I guess that my only solution is to buy a router , but i wonder also, all routers can repeat signal ?
What i want to do is grab a wifi signal and repeat it for cover my home and if possible ussing my own SSID.

As far as I know, only wifi routers can repeat signals. For that purpose you should buy a router with that function.

hi,

not only router can repeat wifi signal. You can also buy a repeater. I think it is the best option for you.
you can get a Netgear Universal Wireless WIFI Repeater for 30€. i have a good experience with it.

ad hoc does not mean that just need a device, but you create an access point.

This guide is in Italian, but you can easily translate it in English with a translator (_h*t*t*p://it.kioskea.net/contents/191-creare-una-rete-wifi-ad-hoc_)

otherwise you can use a software like Connectify or Virtual WiFi Router

I use Connectify software. It Is an excellent program. It allows you to use the wifi card out. Incoming connections to the pc you must obtain or via the ethernet port, or through a 3G dongle.

There's no reason why they shouldn't work in winxp (anyway, it would be easy to find winxp alternatives)

When buying a wifi router, just check "repeater mode" support.
If not availble with stock firmware, but router is accepting alternative firmware such as dd-wrt or openwrt, repeater mode is included in these ones.
Note that when in repeater mode, you will lose half wifi bandwith.

Even a device called 'access point' is good for this purpose, which has to be set in repeater mode.
