TP-Link Router 3220 DNS Problem

I have one of the above that connects to the local wifi system run by Telefonica via wan and Ariel. The problem is that I can change the dns servers on the router but it is not using them it always defaults to the local server network. I have read that alternative firmware is available.

I don't know about alternative firmware, and honoustly have even never about this for a router. Only tip I can give you: check if you router has the latest firmware, and perhaps even re-install it.

No (official!) possibilities to check and/or upgrade the firmware of your local wifi-system?

Are you sure your router allows change of dns? Mine doesn't I just use the settings on
windows to change dns.

Hello,
I have the same router (v1).
I have installed the latest version of "OpenWRT" fw.
Search this with google.

the best way I can describe the sever is it is like a massive local in house network so it allocates as a dns server a local network ip, the others that I want to use are showing on a search so should be available but the router will not force it ( I suppose it could be being blocked by the local isp, the router is a cheap one I have better ones for adsl but I am waiting for a landline estimate 3mths. The alternative firmware is supposed to open up the flexibility of the router. Do a search on alternative firmware for your router it is very interesting.

Yes the router does allow change of dns I have used it on 3g and changed dns, no problem as I said I know the servers are there but can't use them and it makes no difference changing the settings on windows or one of my receivers.

That is the firmware that I was looking at and I am on version 1 the same as you. Have you noticed a big increase in flexibility and features?

As I said in my last post, if you change them on the devices it still defaults either on the router or via the isp to the default. that is why I am wondering if alternative software on the router would free it up.

if you enter it in the router frees all dispositivi.mma void your warranty. Looping on google, writing your model, i found open firmware. ;)

I don't understand you're problem fully.
I'm not so technical.

Is the problem with getting a new IP or so ?
Sometimes my internet-provider, changes auto IP's
But when this happens, I also need to restart my
TP-Link Router, to accept and allow the new ip.

In case what of problems you have, with you're TP-Link Router,
have you ever disconnected the power-cable and then put it
back in, for a so called fresh new start ?

Did help me, with many problems in the past.

I am going to try one at the weekend and report back if it bricks the router they are not very expensive.

OpenWrt is the best you can find concerning flexibility and versatility.

Please, note the two flashing steps required (first flash and upgrade flash) and the presence of LuCI, i.e. the web interface.
If you are not familiar with configuring routers via command line, LuCI should be absolutely installed.

Right got openWrt installed and working on wan and wifi.
Now all I have got o get my head round is DNSmasq to stop the dns reverting to the isp and getting 3g working.
Should keep me busy for a few days.
Will let you know how I get on.

nml, I think you can leave dnsmasq alone ... you really need it to forward dns requests !
My advice is to go to WAN interface panel and edit field "Use custom DNS servers".
That's the way to override dns assigned by your ISP.

Hi most modified firmware works fine, however.
1) Back up your original firmware if you can.
2) Download an anti bricking tool ( recovery if you can )
3) Make a note of all your current settings , including mac code before you start.
4) Ensure you update over lan as over wifi is unreliable

I have used custom dns servers option but still it reverts back to isp's wan servers.
There has to be a solution, but what I don't know, will keep trying and report back any success.
