I just installed windows 8.1 and hate the fact that you can only log in using a Microsoft e mail address. that smells of CONTROL

That's one reason why I would never use it ...

        Are you sure?
I tested the public preview on a VM and it had the normal login. Check that on control panel. I think there's an option to change between offline and Ms login.

You must have at sometime logged into a Microsoft account.
You should be able when it asks you if you are off line to log in with the last password that was used to log in to your Microsoft account.
This is not the password for the computer you may have set none.
So you may have to remember what password you used for the Microsoft account.
if it fails take out the hdd and read any files and transfer.
There is possibly a easier way so anyone any ideas.

By Clicking the Start button deposits you among the live tiles of the modern Start screen.

Windows 8.1 allows you to tweak the Start button to open the Start screen’s.
All Apps list instead, which delivers a much more Start menu-esque experience while still enveloping you in the modern UI.
The new approach is a reasonable compromise, but it also demands compromise from you.

in the begining when you login for first time..

You can use a local user without having to be a windows live account, that's no problem

i suppose the large tiles are for touch screen and the smaller ones for desktop, notebook use. WinX menu is available by right clicking on start button, so you can directly shut down the pc..

Don't know yet, been installing for the last hour.
But I was happy with windows 8 anyway.

you were using the trial version, the full upgrade was only released today.
I don't have a microsoft email, I use my old Yahoo email as my login so no microsoft email is needed.

Well you should be able to upgrade for free, the logging in with a microsoft email stinks.

Already officially released Windows 8.1, I installed upgrading from windows 8. Improved enough and can already start normally with Metro desktop instead. Looks better.
