    Re: problem with system restore

It usually means that you have no complete files stored to restore to that day, could be you have had, are still have, some sort of virus. you may have to do a repair with your windows disc but save all your files if you do windows will do that for you. or just back up all your files and do a clean setup of windows.

        Re: problem with system restore

When you are trying system restore are you logged in as administrator?
Have you tried system restore in safe mode?
When you run out of memory system restore stops creating restore points.
Why do you want to do system restore?
Maybe problem can be sorted out with out restore?
Try to run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware see if that finds anything, if it not a virus
then use msconfig.exe to disable start up programs to see if it is one of them
        which is causing problem.

Ok , you could have run out of space for restore.
          Try booting in safe mode.
If you can do that run combofix, spybot, malware in that order then either superantispyware a virus scanner, the use CCleaner , then all will be fine.

You can do a defragmentation of the HDD. Check whether the HDD has bad sectors. Try to do a system restore with a minimal amount of additional hardware.

                Re: problem with system restore

If you have a hard disk is divided into multiple logical drives and system files is installed on drive C, and all of your files to the other logical drives, you can easily re-install windows xp, if you have all the drivers.

Can you boot at all ?
If so check and see if system restore is started in services.
is it enabled in the drives you are accessing it from?
can you run system restore from safe mode?
from command prompt only use this ( f8 on start up )
go back as far as you can
                  %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
                  then virus scan etc

                      Re: problem with system restore

always after format you should create a system restore point to be safe. if other solution dont work for you then easiest solution is to copy your files and format. nothing best than a clean new windows.

One thing you could do if possible , is to take out your hdd , connect to an external connector, copy files across to a laptop or similar.
Reformatting is a bit drastic at this stage and will require a lot of reinstalling.

If you have a windows disc that will sort it.
